Mass Intention Policy
The following is established in Canon Law:
Canon 945,1
In accord with the approved practice of the Church, any priest celebrating or concelebrating is permitted to receive an offering to apply for a specific intention.
Canon 947
Any appearance of trafficking or trading is to be excluded entirely from the offering of Masses.
Canon 948
Separate Masses are to be applied for the intention of those for whom a single offering, although small, has been given and accepted.
Canon Law establishes that there is to be one intention for each Mass. However, an exception is made in our Archdiocese to allow three intentions for each Mass. A further exception is allowed to include the names of three persons in one intention. The intent of canon law should be kept in mind and the exceptions should not be abused.
It is preferred that only one person or special intention is requested for each Mass Intention.
The following is established at the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe:
The policy is necessary to give everyone the opportunity to have Masses offered throughout the year.
A common experience and frustration for many parishioners is that all of the Mass intentions are filled when they approach the parish office after a friend or family member dies throughout the year. This policy will allow more persons an opportunity to request Mass intentions throughout the year.
Intentions for 2020 will begin to be accepted Monday, November 4, 2019
for the period of January 1 – June 30, 2020 only. Mass intentions for July 1 – December 31, 2020 will be accepted when the Master Calendar for 2020-2021 is completed in June of 2020
and will be announced in the parish bulletin.
